Through a series of place-based writing experiences in Pittsburgh, Westmoreland County, and at the University of Pittsburgh, participants will explore historically, culturally, and civically significant sites through writing, reflection, conversation, and community. Drawing on the National Writing Project tradition of the writing marathon, we will move through public spaces together, pausing to observe, write, and share in a spirit of generosity and curiosity.

Together, we will consider: Whose stories help us understand who we have been, who we are, and who we hope to become?

Participants do not need to consider themselves writers to join. The Window Keeper is open to adult educators, writers, artists, students, community leaders, historians, cultural workers, and anyone curious about the stories that shape our communities. Whether you write every day or have not written in years, you are welcome.

The WPWP will host the Window Keeper experiences on August 15, August 22, and September 12. Transportation and workshop materials will be provided at no cost for participants.

August's topic: A History of PM&R

Presented by: Elizabeth Sandel, MD

Elizabeth Sandel, MD has provided medical care to patients with brain injuries and leadership in her field for more than 40 years. She has practiced medicine and served in teaching, research, and administrative roles in healthcare systems on the East and West Coast, including the Jefferson and University of Pennsylvania Health Systems and Northern California Kaiser Permanente. She was a member of the Brain Injury Medicine Examination Committee of the American Board of PM&R from 2011 to 2015 and was one of the first group of physicians certified in that medical subspecialty in 2014. Now in retirement from clinical practice and research, Dr. Sandel spends much of her time educating the public about brain injury through her website and publications. Her book, Shaken Brain: The Science, Care, and Treatment of Concussion (Harvard University Press, 2020), is a resource for patients, families, and others who want to understand injuries to the brain and what interventions can help.

Abstract: As whole exome and genome sequencing become more prevalent, hundreds of genes associated with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) have been identified. Among these are numerous genes encoding synaptic proteins that can have highly penetrant rare variants that are pathogenic. Our lab focuses on two families of postsynaptic proteins, NMDA receptors and neuroligins, that are high confidence NDD genes. We explore the synaptic consequences of these pathogenic de novo mutations. GRIN genes encode NMDA receptors subunits, which are glutamate receptors that are essential for neuronal development, learning, and memory. Endogenous NMDA receptors are typically composed of two GluN1 subunits and two GluN2 subunits. Our recent findings identify a cluster of pathogenic variants that lead to disruption of the PDZ binding site in GluN2B and protein destabilization. In other studies, our group is making mouse models to study pathogenic truncating mutations in GRIN2B and GRIN2A to determine the message stability, protein expression, and synaptic localization. By revealing the mechanistic consequences of genetic variants of NMDAR subunits, we hope to shed light on the mechanisms of disease and develop better therapeutics. Similarly, we are studying the effects of pathogenic rare variants on neuroligin function. We have identified multiple clusters of highly penetrant variants in NLGN4X that lead to protein trafficking deficits. In collaborations with National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), we have conducted drug screens and have several candidate molecules for rescuing the trafficking deficits in NLGN4X variants. We hope our discoveries can facilitate development of therapeutics for NDD disorders.

Department of Human Genetics Doctoral Candidate, Riley Arbuckle, will defend the following dissertation on “Novel Candidate Gene for Congenital Stationary Night Blindness Characterized in a CRISPR-Cas9 Knockout Mouse Model”

ABSTRACT:

Congenital Stationary Night Blindness (CSNB) is a nonprogressive, inherited retinal disease marked by reduced scotopic vision, altered photopic vision, and impaired dark adaptation. Many G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), such as rhodopsin or metabotropic glutamate receptor 6 and GPR179, are implicated in retinal diseases, including CSNB. The orphan GPCR GPR152 is highly expressed in rods and cones, and localizes to the outer segment of both photoreceptors, with its retinal function uncharacterized. This study aims to characterize the of GPR152 in the retina, using a Gpr152 knockout (KO) mouse model, generated via CRISPR/Cas9 deletion of the entire open reading frame in exon 2. We evaluated retinal function and morphology by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), fundus imaging, optodrum, and full-field electroretinogram (ERG) from P45 through P365 with transcriptional profiling by RNA-seq. Ultrastructural changes were examined via transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Gpr152-/- mice experienced a reduction of scotopic ERG a- and b-waves from P90 which remained stable over time until P365. The photopic responses of the Gpr152-/- mice remained similar to WT levels, suggesting a rod-selective requirement of this gene. Retinal structure remained normal by SD-OCT, TEM, and fundus imaging throughout the KO mice’s lifespan, parallelling the nonprogressive, structurally normal phenotype seen in human CSNB patients. Gene Ontology showed loss of Gpr152 leading to the downregulation of genes involved in genes synapses and the visual cycle (e.g., Bex4, Cck), consistent with downstream adaptation to altered outer segment signaling. To test clinical significance, we screened CSNB patients to determine if GPR152 is associated with CSNB, identifying one human CSNB patient with severe myopia carrying biallelic, compound heterozygous variants that may affect GPR152 function. Our findings indicate that GPR152 is an outer segment-localized regulator of rod phototransduction, expanding our understanding of orphan GPCRs in vision, and supporting GPR152 as a candidate CSNB gene.

Abstract Polymer performance is often governed not by molecular structure alone, but by the nonequilibrium states captured during processing. Because polymer chains are anisotropic, conformationally rich, and slow to relax, the steps that create a product—flow, cooling, stretching, drying, crystallization, cure, and interfacial interaction—can encode structural features that are difficult to observe directly yet decisive for performance.

This seminar presents a framework for identifying these hidden observables and converting them into predictive design rules. In high-performance fibers, thermal and stress history are linked to paracrystalline disorder and mechanical response, which can be read through an iso-strain force–thermal test. In polymer nanocomposites, interfacial constraints suppress chain mobility until an interface behaves as an effective material phase. In transparent hardcoats, nanoparticle packing and defect populations determine whether glasslike mechanics can survive in a manufacturable coating. In membranes and biodegradable polymers, free volume, defectivity, and molecular accessibility govern transport, separation performance, and environmental fate.

One question recurs across these systems: how do processing, interfaces, and molecular mobility create hidden polymer states, and how can those states be measured, modeled, and ultimately controlled? I will close with future directions in intelligent polymer processing, interface-controlled separations, and biodegradation-by-design. I will also reflect on Materials by Design as both a research methodology and a career framework: a way to turn real-world constraints into fundamental scientific questions, build collaborations across disciplines, and mentor students and early-career scientists to connect rigorous science with meaningful technological impact.

Short Bio Sketch: YuanQiao Rao is Professor and Department Chair of Polymer Science, Engineering and Technology at Penn State Behrend. Before joining Penn State, she spent more than two decades in industrial research and development at Eastman Kodak and Dow, where she advanced materials technologies in polymer thin films, coatings, nanocomposites, membranes, optical materials, sustainable polymers, and high-throughput materials discovery. She was named a Dow Fellow and later a Senior R&D Fellow.

Dr. Rao’s research focuses on how molecular design, interfaces, processing history, and structural architecture govern material performance, reliability, and sustainability. Her current interests include intelligent polymer processing, interface-controlled materials, membranes for critical separations, and biodegradation-by-design. She is an ACS Fellow and a recipient of the SASE Career Achievement Award, an R&D 100 Award, and an Edison Award.

The kickoff event starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, in C4C: The Understory (Cathedral of Learning basement, B-50). The challenge begins at 11 a.m., and films must be completed and uploaded by 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6.

Submissions will be eligible for a wide array of awards and prizes!

Envisioning a Just Pittsburgh is a call for art that aims to bring together a diverse group of emerging and experienced artists to depict their visions of justice, equality, and community resilience. This year’s theme, Home, invites artists and partners to explore what it means to belong, to feel grounded, and to imagine Pittsburgh as a place where everyone can live and thrive.

Across Carnegie Museums, conversations about home are already unfolding through exhibitions, programs, and partnerships that consider belonging, memory, and return. This Call for Art extends that inquiry outward, centering community voices and lived experience across the region.

This year, we invite artists to respond to Home as both a question and a practice.

Through a series of place-based writing experiences in Pittsburgh, Westmoreland County, and at the University of Pittsburgh, participants will explore historically, culturally, and civically significant sites through writing, reflection, conversation, and community. Drawing on the National Writing Project tradition of the writing marathon, we will move through public spaces together, pausing to observe, write, and share in a spirit of generosity and curiosity.

Together, we will consider: Whose stories help us understand who we have been, who we are, and who we hope to become?

Participants do not need to consider themselves writers to join. The Window Keeper is open to adult educators, writers, artists, students, community leaders, historians, cultural workers, and anyone curious about the stories that shape our communities. Whether you write every day or have not written in years, you are welcome.

The WPWP will host the Window Keeper experiences on August 15, August 22, and September 12. Transportation and workshop materials will be provided at no cost for participants.

September's topic: Unlocking Circuits and Designing Cross-species tools for Pain Discovery and Therapeutics

Presented by: Rebecca Seal, PhD

Rebecca Seal is a Professor of Neurobiology and Otolaryngology in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Research in her lab aims to understand how the various forms of persistent pain, across diverse pathological conditions, traverse the spinal cord with the goal of targeting the spinal cord to treat chronic pain. The lab employs a range of approaches in both rodents and primates and is pioneering non-invasive gene therapy. Dr. Seal is a Rita Allen Foundation Scholar and a Brain and Behavior Foundation Scholar and is Chair of the Pain Research Forum at the International Association for the Study of Pain, an active member of the Society for Neuroscience, and a co-Director of the Pittsburgh Pain Consortium. She previously served on the organizing committee to create the US Association for the Study of Pain (USASP) and served on the Board of Directors of USASP.

Abstract: : Artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving from a passive analytical tool into an active partner in scientific discovery. In the material world, this transition requires systems that do more than recognize patterns: they must reason across scales, formulate hypotheses, design and execute investigations, learn from failure, and revise their own representations in response to evidence. This talk presents emerging approaches toward “superintelligent” discovery engines that integrate reinforcement learning, graph-based reasoning, physics-informed neural architectures, generative models, and autonomous tools for simulation, experimentation, design, and manufacturing. Particular emphasis will be placed on multi-agent systems inspired by collective intelligence in nature, in which specialized agents collaborate, critique one another, and continuously improve their strategies as they solve complex scientific problems. Case studies from materials science, engineering, and biology will illustrate how these systems can uncover hidden structure-property relationships, generate and evaluate novel material and molecular designs, connect knowledge across disciplinary boundaries, and transform scientific failures into new hypotheses and executable knowledge. These advances point toward a new form of artificial intelligence that actively expands the boundaries of human knowledge.

Short Bio Sketch: Markus J. Buehler is the McAfee Professor of Engineering at MIT, a pioneer in AI-driven knowledge discovery and materials science. He created graph-aware, multi-agent AI platforms that turn heterogeneous data into science-grounded, actionable insight, powering breakthroughs in materials science, biology, and healthcare. Buehler is among the world's most-cited materials scientists and the recipient of numerous honors, including the Feynman Prize, ASME Drucker Medal, J. R. Rice Medal, and the Washington Award. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). For more than a decade he has also taught executive and technical professionals at MIT, shaping the next generation of leaders in engineering, knowledge discovery, and artificial intelligence.

Participants will discuss secondary traumatic stress (“STS”) and its relevance to these trends. We will define STS and two related problems, compassion fatigue and burnout. Then we will consider symptoms of these and how to develop resilience through a personal “compassion satisfaction plan” that protects their well-being and effectiveness in these settings.

Modern medicine runs on single use. Most of what touches a patient is used once and thrown away, and health care's resulting footprint now causes disease burden on the scale of preventable medical errors. This session asks a design question: how did the disposable become the default, and how do engineers build the way out? We'll look at the problem honestly and then at devices that reimagine it, from a solar-powered system that outperformed the conventional standard of care to materials designed to break down safely instead of lingering as waste. Aimed at anyone who wants to design medicine that heals people without harming the planet.

Fostering Independence (Competency #6)Promoting Professional Development (Competency #7), and Promoting Professional Development and Articulating Your Mentoring Philosophy and Plan (Competency #8)

Sessions are conducted through interactive case studies. Mentoring Academy members, who are trained faculty recognized for their mentoring contributions at the University of Pittsburgh, will facilitate each session. Workshop 3:  Advanced ScRNASeq Analysis Using Partek Flow focusing on Multiple samples dive into an advanced ScRNASeq analysis techniques using Partek Flow, exploring multiple sample datasets. Enhance your skills in complex single cell rnaseq data analysis covering clustering options, batch effects correction methods, and visualization techniques.

Abstract: The emergence of electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks (c-MOFs) has been one of the most paradoxical developments in the field in the last few years. Indeed, how can one transport charges through a material that is mostly “empty” space? In this sense, MOFs made from layers of organic ligands connected by (typically) square-planar metal ions have shown particularly good electrical conductivity. However, a precise mechanism for charge transport is still the subject of debate, with various experimental and computational reports describing these materials as metals, semiconductors, or semimetals. This lecture will describe the latest efforts from our group to understand the intrinsic properties of 2D c-MOFs, especially as related to single-crystal electrical measurement studies and will discuss in particular the unexpectedly large influence of out-of-plane transport. The seminar will also discuss how these fundamental studies have led directly to the discovery of a sustainable, organic cathode material that is competitive with incumbent oxides in Li-ion and Na-ion rechargeable batteries.

Short Bio Sketch: Mircea Dincă is the Alexander Stewart 1886 Professor of Chemistry at Princeton University. He grew up in Romania and moved to the United States to pursue his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at Princeton University. Graduate studies in Inorganic Chemistry at UC Berkeley were followed by a postdoctoral appointment at MIT. He started his independent career in 2010 at MIT and moved his group to Princeton in 2025. His research focuses on the synthesis of new multifunctional materials for applications in electrical and electronic devices, heterogeneous catalysis, and various uses in clean and renewable energy. In recognition of his group's research, Dincă has been awarded the Alan T. Waterman Award from the NSF in 2016, the ACS Award in Pure Chemistry in 2018, and the Blavatnik National Award in Chemistry in 2021, among several others. He has been named to the Thomson-Reuters/Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Chemists List yearly since 2014.

The Latin American and Caribbean Festival has experienced more than four decades of sustained success, with continuous growth in attendance, artistic quality, community participation, and media visibility. As Pittsburgh’s Latino and Hispanic populations have continued to expand, the festival has become one of the largest and most significant gatherings of Latin American and Latinx communities in Western Pennsylvania, drawing students, families, artists, and visitors from across the region.

The mission of the Latin American and Caribbean Festival is to showcase the diverse cultures of Latin America and the Caribbean in Pittsburgh while educating students and the broader public about the rich cultural, educational, and community resources available throughout the region. Through free and open access, the festival promotes inclusivity, cross-cultural understanding, and meaningful community engagement.

Workshop 4: Single Cell Multiomics Analysis Using Partek Flow will dive into an advanced single cell multiomics data analysis using Partek flow. This workshop covers the integration and analysis of multiple data types, including CITE-seq (gene expression and protein), scATAC-seq (chromatin accessibility) and scATAC + RNASeq (gene expression and chromatin accessibility).
