Target Audience

Experimental biologists seeking to analyze bulk RNA-Seq data generated through experiments or retrieved from a repository such as GEO. The software covered in the workshop operates through a user-friendly, point-and-click graphical user interface, so neither programming experience nor familiarity with the command-line interface is required.

This roundtable for faculty innovators and commercialization leaders will be a candid discussion on the challenges of moving research toward real-world adoption.

The conversation will focus on what “de-risking” actually means in practice: technical validation, market validation, customer discovery, regulatory pathways, translational funding, or the right industry partnerships.

Join University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University faculty, researchers, and postdoctoral scholars working at the earliest stages of research translation.

The conversation will focus on the questions that arise before a technology is ready for licensing, company formation, corporate partnership, or outside investment. Discussions will explore how researchers can identify unmet needs, define and protect intellectual property, engage industry early, and determine what evidence or validation is needed to move promising research forward.

This event will touch upon two topics:

Ian Barbash, MD, MS, is a practicing clinician, leader, and writer. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and as a pulmonary and critical care attending physician at UPMC. Ian is also Medical Director of Physician THRIVE, UPMC’s physician wellbeing programs. He graduated from Williams College and Harvard Medical School before completing residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and fellowship in Pittsburgh. After fellowship, he completed an F32 from NHLBI and K08 from AHRQ before transitioning into his current career in clinical leadership.

Ian’s published academic writing comprises critical care health services research and narrative medicine, which has appeared in JAMA, NEJM Catalyst, Annals of Internal Medicine, and several pulmonary and critical care journals.

As a survivor of the intensive care unit himself, Ian’s work is also informed by his personal understanding of critical illness and its aftermath. He writes and speaks about this experience to promote empathy for both healthcare professionals and the people they serve. Ian lives in Pittsburgh with his wife and four children.

Nov 18, 2026: Gene Expression and Network Visualization using Cytoscape

This workshop offers an introduction to analyze and visualize the gene expression data through network-based approaches. Participants will learn how to upload gene lists to public protein interaction resources such as STRING DB to retrieve relevant interaction networks and import them to Cytoscape. Then the attendees will explore methods for analyzing gene ontology terms and biological pathways within the context of the network. The workshop utilizes the free, user-friendly Cytoscape software, which features a graphical, point-and-click interface suitable for researchers at any experience level

Target Audience

Experimental biologists seeking to learn how to visualize the data generated through experiments or retrieved from a publication or a repository such as GEO. The software covered in the workshop operates through a user-friendly, point-and-click graphical user interface, so neither computer programming experience nor familiarity with command line interface is required.

Upon completing this class, you should be able to:

Upload gene lists to public protein interaction databases (e.g., STRING DB) and retrieve interaction networks relevant to their data.Import and visualize these networks in Cytoscape, mapping gene expression values to network nodes using customizable visual styles.Analyze and interpret functional associations such as gene ontology enrichment and biological pathways witin the network context.Utilize various apps and apply network layouts to highlight biologically meaningful patterns in their data.Export publication-ready network visualizations and results for further analysis or sharingDate: November 18, 2026

Discussion of health literacy and the fight against health misinformation often centers around fact-checking or debunking written materials. However, identifying misleading visualizations and imagery is also a vital skill for navigating the current health information landscape. This interactive session will give you a variety of skills to analyze visual information. Deceptive imagery types covered will include graphs and charts, manipulated images in scientific publications, out-of-context images, and AI-generated imagery.

Upon completing this class, you should be able to:
