Named for Rufus Fitzgerald, the University’s chancellor from 1945 to 1955, the Fitzgerald Field House was for five decades the home of the Pitt men’s and women’s basketball programs. Both teams moved to the Petersen Events Center in 2002, but the 4,122-seat Field House remains the competitive venue for Pitt’s volleyball, gymnastics, and wrestling teams, as well as the primary indoor facility for the track and field team. It also houses training and equipment rooms. Notable events at Fitzgerald Field House have included NCAA national and regional championships in gymnastics, wrestling, and volleyball; 2005 Senior Olympics competitions; and a 1962 speech by President John F. Kennedy.
