Friday, September 24

Open House Celebration: 2 - 5 p.m.

Genealogy and Family History Workshop: 3 - 4 p.m.

More information below!

Registration is required to access Hillman Library for those without a Pitt ID. Registration for the Open-House does not register you for the Genealogy Workshop. If you wish to attend the Genealogy Workshop, please be sure to select this attendance separately on the registration form.

Explore some of the library's unique and rare items of great cultural significance with curated exhibits in the new Archives & Special Collections Gallery!

Curated exhibits on display include August Wilson Archive, Curtis Theatre Collection Highlights (including Bob Johnson, Pittsburgh Black Theatre Dance Ensemble, and Kuntu Repertory Theatre), Be Strong and of Good Courage: A Celebration of Women at Pitt, The Art of Noh: Woodblock Prints by Tsukioka Kōgy, Ukiyo-e from the Rosensteel Japanese Woodblock Prints Collection, History of Sound Recording, Artists’ Books on Social & Environmental Justice (from Frick Fine Arts Library Collections), Erroll Garner: Jazz Recordings Before the Remasters, Selections from the George A. Romero Archival Collection, Small Press Activism: The Pamphlet as an Agent for Social and Political Change, Ethelbert Nevin: Playing “Narcissus” from Pittsburgh to Europe, Places You Wouldn’t Believe: Selections from the Gerald Stern Papers, Limited Editions Club Publications, and mid-century DIY rare books.

Visit the Archives & Special Collections Reading Room to view selections from our fast-growing horror studies collections!

Come see materials from the George A. Romero Archival Collection including scripts from both his classic films and for unproduced projects, production materials for films made in Pittsburgh, and behind the scenes photos.  Also on view will be materials from new acquisitions: see the creative process come to life with drafts and edits from the literary papers of Daniel Kraus, Kathe Koja, and Linda D. Addison; and get a peek into the history and community built by the Horror Writers Association through their archive of newsletters and convention programs.

Learn about and try your hand at printmaking, paper marbling, woodcut creation and more in the new Text & conText Lab!

What role does print and letterpress culture have in an increasingly digital world? Find out by exploring the Text & conText Lab, a new collaboration between the Center for Creativity and the University Library System. Come by the Lab to see - and try out - our vintage Vandercook printing press, as well as paper marbling, bookmaking, lino and woodcut creation, and more. Make a postcard or a simple book, or leave your mark for a special collaborative alumni book!

And lastly, the University of Pittsburgh Library System (ULS) invites our Pitt Alumni to a Genealogy and Family History Workshop hosted by the archivists from the Archives and Special Collections Department.  Participants will learn about essential research tools and document types that can lead them on a pathway to discovering your own heritage.  Included in the workshop will be an introduction to basic recordkeeping techniques and forms that will assist any researcher with documenting their pathways back in-time. This workshop is from 3:00 - 4:00 PM.

Registration is required for both the Open-House and Genealogy Workshop. Registration can be completed here.

Attendance is not guaranteed for those who do not pre-register.

Please note, attendees will be required to follow all COVID-19 safety guidelines communicated by the Pitt Alumni Association to ensure a safe event for all attendees. More information on these guidelines will be shared upon registration. All events and guidelines are subject to change based on the University’s posture in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We will keep you updated on the status of each event.
