The UN International Decade of Indigenous Languages

The IISE working group of Language Policies will host the upcoming International Brown Bag with William Rivers, PhD, discussing current movements in Indigenous languages, including America’s Languages Working Group.

The United Nation Proclamation of International Decade of Indigenous Languages invites us to initiate ideas for cultural preservation and resource mobilization of Indigenous languages for sustainable development, peace building, and reconciliation.

About Dr. Bill Rivers— Principal, WP Rivers & Associates:

Dr. Bill Rivers has more than 30 years’ experience in language advocacy and capacity at the national level, with significant experience in culture and language for economic development and national security, and publications in second and third language acquisition research, proficiency assessment, program evaluation, and language policy development and advocacy. He served for eight years as the Executive Director of the Joint National Committee for Languages – National Council for Languages and International Studies, a non-profit language advocacy organization, leaving a legacy of significant legislative and policy accomplishments, including the establishment of the Congressional Caucus on America’s Languages, the passage of the World Languages Advancement and Readiness Program, and the establishment of the Commission on Language Learning of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, among many others.

This event is part of IISE International Brown Bag Series and hosted by the Language Policy Working Group.

IISE Brown Bags this spring will feature the three existing school-wide working groups. New members are always welcome as we continue to build momentum in pursuing individual and collaborative projects.
