AAAC 50th Commemoration Weekend – Part of Homecoming 2019
Items will be collected, marking the official commemoration of history for the future. Burial, at a site to be announced, will happen on Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday, January 15, 2020. It will be opened in 2069.
This event is free and open to the public.
All are invited to contribute materials to the time capsule including: letters, photos, video and artifacts from 1969 through today.
Items should communicate an assessment of the life, times and diversity at Pitt over the past 50 years and aspirations for the next 50.
The African American Alumni Council (AAAC) last year kicked off the 50-year commemoration of the 1969 computer center takeover, which led to the forming of Pitt’s Africana Studies program, the recruitment and hiring of more students, staff and faculty of color, and which actualized the Black Action Society’s fight for progress for the African American community at Pitt and in the greater Pittsburgh area.
