In the postwar period, one of the best-selling periodicals in the United States was a comic book following the adventures of Donald Duck and his family, adventures that often took place in the Global South. These stories, which frequently dwelt on the theme of economic inequality, offered a different understanding of US foreign relations than the official narratives that Washington backed. Yet the stories had a remarkable sticking power, and their influence can be tracked for decades, including in the films of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.
