DESCRIPTION:Participants can read their own or their favorite poems or read
or perform a spoken word piece. Pitt students-- this is your event!\n\nSp
oken word is a broad designation for poetry intended for performance. Tho
ugh some spoken word poetry may also be published on the page\, the genre
has its roots in oral traditions and performance. Spoken word can encompa
ss or contain elements of rap\, hip-hop\, storytelling\, theater\, and jaz
z\, rock\, blues\, and folk music and is characterized by rhyme\, repetiti
on\, improvisation\, and word play. Related to slam poetry\, spoken word
may draw on music\, sound\, dance\, or other kinds of performance to conne
ct with audiences.\n\nSpoken word is a great way to express your truth to
others through poetry and performance. Compose the piece using literary de
vices like alliteration\, repetition\, and rhyme to tell your story\, or t
heme.\n\nPittsburgh campus undergraduate students may sign up at www.pitta
rts.org. A zoom link and password will be sent via email prior to the even
 t.
