About this Event
Join the University of Pittsburgh’s Year of Data and Society for an important and timely discussion with Dr. Claire Wardle – co-founder and co-director of Brown University’s Information Futures Lab, coauthor of the Council of Europe’s report “Information Disorder: Toward an interdisciplinary framework for research and policymaking”, and leading expert on user generated content and misinformation.
This talk will discuss the global response to misinformation since 2016, arguing that despite significant resources and numerous initiatives, little has really moved the needle. Wardle argues that we need to reframe the way we think about the issues, and change our mindset about the idea of a 'solution'. Looking at case studies from politics, public health and breaking news, the talk will emphasize the significant challenges in addressing this issue, but will also look forward to some potential opportunities for policymakers, journalists and public health professionals, as well as our responsibilities as individuals.
Following Dr. Wardle’s remarks, there will be time for a question-and-answer session with attendees. The event will be close-captioned and recorded for future access.
Please let us know if you require an accommodation in order to participate in this event. Accommodations may include live captioning, ASL interpreters, and/or captioned media and accessible documents from recorded events. At least 5 days in advance is recommended.
