 n Yuan\, MD\, PhD\, Professor\, Arnold Palmer Endowed Chair in Cancer Preve
ntion\, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center\; Co-Leader\, Cancer Epidemiology and Pr
evention\, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center\; Faculty in Epidemiology \n\nDr. Yua
n received his medical training from the Shanghai Medical University (now t
he Fudan University Shanghai Medical College) in Shanghai\, China\, in 1983
\, and his PhD in Epidemiology from University of Southern California in Lo
s Angeles\, USA\, in 1996. Dr. Yuan is Professor of Epidemiology at Univers
ity of Pittsburgh School of Public Health (GSPH) and Co-Leader of the Cance
r Epidemiology and Prevention Program at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center sin
ce 2011. Dr. Yuan was Professor of Epidemiology at School of Public Health\
, University of Minnesota at Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, prior to his appoint

's\, which have been funded by NIH/NCI since their inceptions. \n\nDr. Yuan
's research has made many novel contributions to the understanding of the r
ole of environmental exposures in combination with genetic factors in the d
evelopment of cancers\, including (1) the role of dietary aflatoxin and its
interaction with chronic hepatitis B infection in the development of hepat
ocellular carcinoma (HCC) in humans\; (2) dietary isothiocyanates against t
he development of lung cancer\; and (3) tobacco nitrosamines biomarkers and
lung cancer risk in humans. based on the novel observations of epidemiolog
ical studies\, Or. Yuan has initiated and lead two NCI-funded randomized\,
placebo controlled phase II clinical trials (1) to evaluate the modulating
effect of dietary phenethyl isothlocyanate on the metabolic detoxitication
of tobacco carcinogen NNK In current smokers\; and 2 to evaluate the modula
ting effect of sultoraphane on risk\nmarkers for lung cancer risk in former
smokers. \n\nDr. Yuan received several awards and honors including the Arn
old Palmer Endowed Chair in Cancer Prevention at University of Pittsburgh\,
faculty awardee of the Delta Omega Society by University of Pittsburgh Sch
ool of Public Health\, and elected member of the American Epidemiology Soci

logy Areas of Emphasis \n\nEach week of our regularly scheduled Seminars\,
there will be optional opportunities to connect both before and after the p
resentation. Join us in the School of Public Health Commons for departmenta
l networking from 11:00 - 11:30 am\, and in room G23 for dialogue with facu
