Presented by: Jian-Min Yuan, MD, PhD, Professor, Arnold Palmer Endowed Chair in Cancer Prevention, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center; Co-Leader, Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center; Faculty in Epidemiology
Dr. Yuan received his medical training from the Shanghai Medical University (now the Fudan University Shanghai Medical College) in Shanghai, China, in 1983, and his PhD in Epidemiology from University of Southern California in Los Angeles, USA, in 1996. Dr. Yuan is Professor of Epidemiology at University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health (GSPH) and Co-Leader of the Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Program at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center since 2011. Dr. Yuan was Professor of Epidemiology at School of Public Health, University of Minnesota at Minneapolis, Minnesota, prior to his appointment with University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Yuan is Principal Investigator (PI) of two large population-based cohort studies - the Shanghai Cohort Study in China and the Singapore Chinese Health Study in Singapore with more than 80,000 participants with more than 25 years of following since the 1990's, which have been funded by NIH/NCI since their inceptions.
Dr. Yuan's research has made many novel contributions to the understanding of the role of environmental exposures in combination with genetic factors in the development of cancers, including (1) the role of dietary aflatoxin and its interaction with chronic hepatitis B infection in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in humans; (2) dietary isothiocyanates against the development of lung cancer; and (3) tobacco nitrosamines biomarkers and lung cancer risk in humans. based on the novel observations of epidemiological studies, Or. Yuan has initiated and lead two NCI-funded randomized, placebo controlled phase II clinical trials (1) to evaluate the modulating effect of dietary phenethyl isothlocyanate on the metabolic detoxitication of tobacco carcinogen NNK In current smokers; and 2 to evaluate the modulating effect of sultoraphane on risk
markers for lung cancer risk in former smokers.
Dr. Yuan received several awards and honors including the Arnold Palmer Endowed Chair in Cancer Prevention at University of Pittsburgh, faculty awardee of the Delta Omega Society by University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, and elected member of the American Epidemiology Society.
