Few people know that the modern system of EMS was born right here in Pittsburgh. This event will bring together Freedom House paramedic John Moon, subject of the 2022 book American Sirens: The Incredible Story of the Black Men Who Became America's First Paramedics by Kevin Hazzard, and current Pittsburgh EMS Chief Amera Gilchrist for a conversation about the role of mentorship in health equity and the legacy of Freedom House. This event will also feature Dr. Sylvia Owusu-Ansah, Antonio Gumucio, and individuals from Pitt Public Health discussing current community-based CPR education efforts as well as a brief training in delivering bystander CPR.
