Some instructors have reported seeing an increase in challenging student behaviors since returning to face-to-face instruction. These types of behaviors can create distractions and stress for faculty and students and, over time, hurt class climate and students’ learning experiences. In this discussion-based session, we will share general strategies for preventing and responding to challenging student behavior by setting and communicating boundaries and expectations, working with students to establish guidelines for conduct, and responding to in-the-moment class disruptions. You will have the opportunity to discuss adapting classroom management strategies for specific instructional contexts.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common challenging behaviors
  • Strategize student-centered methods for proactively preventing challenging behaviors
  • Discuss how to respond to in-class disruptions
