Embracing Disruption: Medicare & Hearing Health
Presented by: Jodi Baxter, AuD

The goal of this presentation is to improve the knowledge and understanding of the practicing audiologist, the definition of audiologists under Medicare and how this interacts with access to hearing health care forMedicare beneficiaries. The current limitations of an audiologist under Medicare impedes efficient accessto hearing health care and the audiologist’s ability to be reimbursed for our full scope of practice. Improvedaccess to hearing health care has garnered tremendous attention by professionals, consumers andlegislators in recent years, however, the barriers to improve access AND evidence-based, professionalservices are not well understood by most. Thus, the purposes of this talk are to review the historical andcurrent definitions of audiologist under Medicare and why the components of the current joint audiologylegislation--Medicare Audiology Access and Services Act (MAASA)--are critical to both audiologists andconsumers alike. The potential mechanisms for coverage of hearing aid and related services underMedicare will also be discussed.
