Title: Design and Fabrication of Multi-functional Surface for Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Shielding

Abstract: There is a critical challenge of designing surfaces for effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding in optoelectronic applications where high visible light transmission is paramount. Computational approaches, specifically Bayesian optimization, were employed to design and refine nanophotonic structures, leading to significant achievements in balancing high EMI shielding effectiveness with exceptional optical transparency. This research identified optimal multilayer and nanocone sandwich architectures. Furthermore, innovative fabrication techniques were developed for creating high-performance transparent EMI shields using silver meshes embedded in glass, demonstrating a practical path towards scalable production of these specialized surfaces for protecting sensitive optical devices and displays.

The investigation also extensively explored the development of next-generation flexible EMI shielding materials essential for wearable technology, personal medical electronics, and adaptable communication systems. By utilizing reactive silver inks, highly conductive and robust silver films were fabricated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates, demonstrating excellent EMI shielding that remained stable even after repeated bending, alongside efficient Joule heating capabilities. This versatile ink technology was successfully translated to knitted textiles, creating highly conductive, stretchable, and wash-durable fabrics. These smart textiles not only provided substantial EMI shielding but also offered integrated functionalities such as Joule heating and strain sensing, paving the way for advanced multi-functional materials. Future work will focus on combining these insights for transparent, flexible EMI shielding solutions.
