New to School: Supporting First-Generation Students

Tuesday, November 17, 2020 1:00pm to 2:00pm

First-generation college students face unique challenges that can impact their success in higher education. Simultaneously, these students have vast potential and often emerge as leaders both in higher education and beyond. This workshop will guide participants in discussing the complex identities of first-generation students, the challenges these students often face, and strategies for supporting them in their higher education journey.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • identify challenges faced by first-generation college students and discuss how these challenges may influence students’ learning and success
  • identify University resources for first-generation students
  • generate strategies for proactively supporting first-generation students
