DESCRIPTION:Limited in-person attendance for Pitt students\, faculty and st
aff. Free\, registration required.\n\nStreaming will be available for the
general public.\n\nMusic on the Edge presents Pitt PhD candidate Devon Osa
mu Tipp performing new music by Pitt graduate composers for shakuhachi and
electroacoustic elements. The program will include works by Cullyn Murphy
 \, Ryan McMasters\, Mark Micchelli\, Jason Belcher\, Emmanuel Berrido\, Ra
min Akhavijou\, and Tipp.\n\nPittsburgh based composer/performer Devon Osa
mu Tipp creates unorthodox musical environments from ostensibly incompatib
le realms. A PhD candidate at the University of Pittsburgh\, Tipp’s musi
c draws influence from his Japanese and Eastern European roots\, his exper
iences as a jeweler and painter\, and his studies of gagaku and hogaku in
Japan and the US. His compositions focus on rhythmic and timbral transmuta
tion of cyclical materials\, ranging from the orchestral\, to string basse
s prepared with honey stirrers\, to concerti for traditional Japanese inst
ruments. He received his BMus from Montclair State University\, where he s
tudied composition and microtonal music with Dean Drummond\, and shakuhach
i with Elizabeth Brown. His music has been performed by microtonal special
ists Kjell Tore Innervik\, Veli Kujala and Tolgahan Çogulu. He has also w
orked with Rarescale\, the Thin Edge New Music Collective\, the TAK Ensemb
le\, and members of Avanti! Chamber Orchestra. His compositions have been
featured at the Soundscape Festival\, Bowdoin Festival\, Beyond 2020: Micr
otonal Music Festival\, and the 2015 Tokyo International Double Reed Socie
 ty Conference.
