This is the third and final session of the Mentoring Academy. This virtual session will provide an opportunity. This virtual session will provide an opportunity to discuss best practices in 

• Fostering Independence (Competency #6)
• Promoting Professional Development (Competency #7), and
• Promoting Professional Development and Articulating Your Mentoring Philosophy and Plan (Competency #8)

Sessions are conducted through interactive case studies. Mentoring Academy members, who are trained faculty recognized for their mentoring contributions at the University of Pittsburgh, will facilitate each session. Participants can attend one or all Mentoring Academy sessions to earn a credential covering all eight competencies, based on the curriculum from the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research.

Participants will be able to:

• Define independence, its core elements, and how those elements change throughout a mentoring relationship.
• Employ strategies to build mentee confidence, establish trust, and foster independence.
• Identify the benefits and challenges of fostering independence.
