Fostering Independence, Promoting Professional Development, and Articulating Your Mentoring Philosophy

This is the third and final session of the spring term series of the Mentoring Academy. This virtual session offers an opportunity to discuss best practices in

  • Fostering Independence (Competency #6)
  • Promoting Professional Development (Competency #7), and
  • Promoting Professional Development and Articulating Your Mentoring Philosophy and Plan (Competency #8)

Sessions are delivered through interactive case studies. Mentoring Academy members, who are trained faculty recognized for their mentoring contributions at the University of Pittsburgh, will facilitate each session. Participants can attend a single Mentoring Academy session or all sessions to earn a credential for all eight competencies, based on the curriculum from the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Define independence, its core elements, and how those elements change throughout a mentoring relationship.
  • Employ strategies to build mentee confidence, establish trust, and foster independence.
  • Identify the benefits and challenges of fostering independence.

Guest Facilitators:

Joseph Ayoob, Center for Mentoring Fellow and Associate Professor, School of Medicine
April Dukes, Center for Mentoring Fellow, Institutional Co-leader for Pitt-CIRTL (Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning), and the Faculty and Future Faculty Program Director for the Engineering Educational Research Center (EERC)
