 Oak Ridge National Laboratory \n\nBio:\n\nDr. Christian Petrie leads the F
 uel Cladding and Core Internals Group and performs research spanning a wid
 e range of areas including nuclear fuel development\, accelerated fuel qua
 lification\, advanced manufacturing\, accelerated irradiation testing\, an
 d sensor integration. Dr. Petrie is driving new innovations in nuclear sci
 ence and technology through scientific output\, industry engagement\, and 
 organizational and programmatic leadership. He is responsible for the conc
 eption and commissioning of several unique separate-effects irradiation ve
 hicles in the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) that target important pheno
 mena specific to advanced nuclear fuels\, fuel cladding materials\, and se
 nsors. Dr. Petrie is a leading expert on fiber-optic sensors for nuclear a
 pplications. He has demonstrated sensors for measuring reactor conditions 
 (e.g.\, spatially distributed temperature and strain\, pressure\, corrosio
 n\, gamma heating\, and liquid level)\; embedded sensors in metal and cera
 mic materials using various additive manufacturing processes\; and publish
 ed many papers on the performance of fiber-optic sensors under extreme nuc
 lear reactor–relevant environments. Dr. Petrie has authored more than 14
 0 peer-reviewed publications in archived journals and conference proceedin
 gs\, holds numerous programmatic leadership roles within the US Department
  of Energy\, Office of Nuclear Energy\, and has received many awards for h
 is professional service.\n\n \n\n \n\nTopic: Fiber Optic Sensing for Nucle
 ar Applications: Challenges and Opportunities \n\nAbstract:\n\nNuclear ene
 rgy accounts for nearly 20% of US power generation\, with hopes to deploy 
 additional generating capacity in the coming decades. Advanced instrumenta
 tion is a critical part of ensuring the safety and economics of the existi
 ng aging fleet of nuclear reactors as well as new reactor concepts\, both 
 of which would benefit from enhanced health monitoring capabilities to red
 uce operating and maintenance costs. Fiber optic sensors are promising can
 didates due to their small size\, high accuracy\, and ability to perform s
 patially distributed measurements under relatively harsh environmental con
 ditions. This presentation discusses potential applications of fiber optic
  sensors for nuclear energy applications as well as challenges to their de
 ployment\, which include radiation effects and methods for embedding or ot
 herwise attaching sensors to nuclear reactor components.\n\n \n\nThursday\
