Mobile Health Apps for People in Disadvantaged Populations

Speaker: Dr. Leming Zhou

Abstract: Cost, access to healthcare services, and quality of care are three major issues in the U.S. healthcare system. These issues are particularly significant for people in disadvantaged populations, such as people with disabilities and people in minority communities. Mobile health apps can be one of the possible solutions to reduce cost, improve healthcare service access, and provide comparable quality of care to people in disadvantaged populations. In our studies, we have created and evaluated mobile health apps, and investigated multiple approaches to improve users’ satisfaction with mobile health apps, such as enhancing usability and accessibility of the apps, strengthening information security, and providing education to users. The common goal of these studies is to make mobile health apps readily accessible and highly useful to people in disadvantaged populations.
