DESCRIPTION:Git is a widely used “version control” software for trackin
g changes in your project files over time. Individual snapshots may be use
d to revisit former versions of a file (or of the whole project) at any ti
me. Git also contains collaborative features so that everyone can easily a
nd continuously reconcile their local copies of the project. GitHub is a w
eb platform for hosting and sharing Git projects\, especially software cod
 e. In this online\, hands-on workshop\, we’ll get an overview of how to
use Git and GitHub for more effective research. Participants who wish to f
ollow hands-on should have some familiarity with the command line. (See ou
 r January 17 workshop!) \n\nTopics include: \n\nConcepts of repository\, s
 taging\, committing\, and branches \n\nUsing git for a solo project\; comm
itting and checking out \n\nGitHub overview\; concepts of pull request and
fork \n\nUsing git collaboratively\; concept of merging\; handling merge
conflicts \n\nOpen Science practices and Git/GitHub \n\nCan't make it to t
his workshop? You can always contact us for help\, stop by our Drop-In Hou
