CONSORT, the first health research reporting guideline, was initially published in 1996. Since then, hundreds of reporting guidelines and guideline extensions have been developed to improve the reporting of health research, all designed with the aims of: describing methods clearly and transparently, improving the reporting of protocol deviations, and ensuring a complete report of results that flows from background to study objectives to methods.

After taking this class, participants will be able to:

• Identify the HSLS LibGuide that links to reporting guidelines
• Explain the differences between reporting guidelines and guideline extensions
• Describe how both reporting guidelines and critical appraisal tools can be used throughout the life cycle of a project, from development to dissemination
