Dr. Shiori Shakuto joined the University of Sydney's Department of Anthropology as a Lecturer in 2022. Taking inspiration from transnational feminist anthropology, her research approaches the space of the household as a generative site of transnational actions. She has explored these themes through long-term ethnographic research on the rise of companionate marriage ideals among the Japanese retirement community in Malaysia and, more recently, on the gendered response to an environmental disaster by female Japanese transnational evacuees in Southeast Asia. Her current research tracks the transnational lives of plastic waste in the Asia Pacific regions to address the unequal global distribution of wealth and waste.
