Collecting student feedback at critical touchpoints throughout the term helps faculty connect with students, identify concerns, and gauge how the class is progressing. Discussing and using feedback gives students a sense of ownership in their learning experience and a chance to reflect on their own efforts.

This workshop will cover the value and benefits of establishing a feedback cycle at the start of the term by using a pre-course survey, using a midterm survey to check in with students half way through, and finishing up with end-of-term teaching surveys. We’ll discuss best practices for designing custom survey questions that illicit meaningful responses and interpreting and using the results to make a positive impact on the current class climate and inform future planning. The workshop will also cover techniques for sharing and discussing results with students.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the value of collecting student feedback throughout the term.
  • Design custom survey questions for targeted feedback along with questions that allow students to voice a wide range of perspectives.
  • Identify ways to encourage students to respond and give meaningful feedback.
  • Reflect and act on results.
  • Close the loop with students.
