Title: Quantum Biology

Abstract: The transdisciplinary field of quantum biology applies models and concepts from quantum mechanics to explain biological phenomena. After a nontechnical review of some key topics in this field where these quantum theoretical resources are deemed indispensable, I address the question of what, exactly, makes them so. I then draw implications for scientific explanation and the relations between disciplines and levels of reality, among other things.

• Where are you now?
  • The University of Oxford and Merton College, Oxford.

• What are you working on?
  • At the moment, principally on my NSF-sponsored project A Modern Philosophy for Classical Statistical Testing and Estimation, but also history and philosophy of general relativity, indeterminacy in quantum mechanics, and philosophical issues in the replication crisis.

• Favorite memory of The Center?
  • Post-reading group discussions at Pittsburgh restaurants.

• Greatest non-professional achievement since leaving the Center?
  • Making vases and glasses from my collection of screen-printed beer bottles.

• Best book/movie/tv you’ve seen lately?
  • Plein Soleil (1960)
