“Give me mine Angle, we’ll to the ‘River,” Berners, Shakespeare, Foster, & Rinehart: Four Views of Fysshynge wyth an Angle, 15th Century-20th Century, features a facsimile of the earliest printed work on angling published in 1496 by Wynkyn de Worde and attributed to Juliana Berners, the 15th century prioress at the Priory of St. Mary of Sopwell in England; select quotations on fishing by William Shakespeare from his plays; the remarkable landscape paintings from the 20th century logbook of the Scottish angler and artist Muriel C. Foster, who painted and fished for salmon and sea trout in the area of Dundonnell and Little Loch Broom on the west coast of Scotland; and fishing stories by Mary Roberts Rinehart of her encounters with a wily trout in the Pacific Northwest, and a tarpon and a shark at Useppa Island, Florida. All original works are reproduced in facsimile from digital scans. This exhibit is free and open to the public during Hillman Library hours.
