The inaugural session for the Provost’s Diversity Institute for Faculty Development with Dr. Jay Dolmage serves as a grounding to consider the exclusionary history and sociocultural context of ableism in higher education as an essential step towards creating a more systematic approach for anti-ableism in higher education.

We will collaborate to address the ableist attitudes, policies, and practices built into higher education. We will also interrogate the minimal and temporary means we have been given to address inequities and the cost such an approach has for disabled students, staff, and faculty. We will then work together to share and develop strategies and tools for a more accessible, anti-ableist classroom and campus.

Guest Facilitator: Jay Dolmage, Professor, Chair of English, University of Waterloo
Book: Academic Ableism: Disability and Higher Education

Registration for this session is open to full- and part-time faculty affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh. The institute welcomes faculty from external institutions in the Pittsburgh region.
