The Variety Possible in an Academic Career – A Ten Year Reflection
Jennifer Barkin, PhD, MS
Vice Chair & Associate Professor, Community Medicine Associate, Professor, OB/GYN Director, Academic Health Department, Mercer University School of Medicine, University of Utah School of Medicine
Dr. Jennifer Barkin has implemented innovative course content related to the effects of climate change on clinical practice and pandemic preparedness in addition to overhauling the reporting structure in the Population Health and Medical Research program during her tenure as Vice Chair. Dr. Barkin’s intellectual property, the Barkin Index of Maternal Functioning (BIMF), was developed during her time as a doctoral student at the Epidemiology Data Center. The BIMF has been commercially licensed seven times since 2015, including for the clinical trials for FDA-breakthrough postpartum depression medication Zulresso® (brexanolone). She collaborates with organizations all over the world to validate the index and explore pertinent research questions related to maternal functioning and mental health. Her recent work has been described as “state-of-the-art” and includes a focus on the mental health effects of climate change on mothers and children.
Medical Professionals receive CME credit by texting COVDUX to 412-312-4424 during the seminar. Course Attendance is recorded through zoom for both students and GSR’s. Students and GSR’s attending in person should swipe their Panther ID at the bottom entrance to G23 to register their attendance. Students should come prepared with engaging questions for the presenters. Students not registered for the course, postdocs, & faculty are welcome to participate.
