"Black Politics" in Latin America, 1870- 1960" Prof. G.  Reid Andrews

In newly independent Latin American nations, constitutional guarantees of civic equality enabled full Black and indigenous participation in national politics.  This lecture will explore debates in the Black Newspapers of Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, and Uruguay over what forms that participation should take, and how Black politics in the regions evolved from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s.

George Reid Andrews has taught Latin American history at the University of Pittsburgh since 1981.  He is the author or editor of numerous books on Black History in the region, including Afro-Latin America, 1800-2000; Blackness in the White Nation: A History of Afro-Uruguay; Afro-Latin America: Black Lives, 1600-2000; and most recently, Voices of the Race: Black Newspapers in Latin America, 1870-1960, co-edited with Pauline Alberto and Jesse Hoffnung-Garskof.
