Abstract: Enhancing diversity is crucial for addressing the shortage of qualified cybersecurity professionals and the quickly evolving cyber threat landscape. Yet, participation in the field from underrepresented groups and women remains low. This session will highlight educational programs, best practices, and lessons learned from the University of West Florida to enhance diversity in cybersecurity. Dr. El-Sheikh will share education and workforce development programs to broaden participation in the field and outreach initiatives to increase cybersecurity awareness and interest among underrepresented populations. The session will include insights and resources to enhance diversity.
Bio: Dr. Eman El-Sheikh is Associate Vice President and Professor at the University of West Florida Center for Cybersecurity. Eman has extensive expertise in cybersecurity education, research, and workforce development. She received several awards and grants to enhance cybersecurity education, workforce development, and diversity, and was recognized among the 2020 Women Leaders in Cybersecurity by Security Magazine. Dr. El-Sheikh leads several national and regional initiatives, including the National Cybersecurity Workforce Development Program and the Southeast Regional Hub for the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity. She has published several books, including Computer and Network Security Essentials by Springer Publishing, over 80 peer-reviewed articles and given over 115 invited talks and presentations. Eman also co-founded the Florida Women in Cybersecurity Affiliate. She holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Michigan State University.
