Free six week summer lecture series on Group Theory in Solid State Physics
David Snoke will present the basics of group theory, especially for experimentalists, in the context of solid state physics, in six one-hour lectures, On Thursdays from 2 PM to 3 PM, running July 18 to August 22, in Allen Hall 321. The lectures will be based on material in his book, Solid State Physics: Essential Concepts, but buying the book is not necessary, as notes will be given out. Anyone is welcome; there is no course credit. Topics include selection rules, essential degeneracies, k.p theory of electron bands, strain effects, and the method of invariants for determining the form of operators.
