Andy McPhee, RN, MA
Author of Donora Death Fog: Clean Air and the Tragedy of a Pennsylvania Mill Town
Abstract: On Halloween weekend in 1948, a heavy fog descended upon Donora, a small mill town 30 miles south of Pittsburgh. The fog, dense with fluorine gas from the zinc mill at the north end of town, would claim 21 lives before the week’s end, resulting in what would become known as the worst air pollution crisis in US history. In this program, author Andy McPhee will discuss the town, its mills, and the smog which led to legislation regulating emissions of hazardous air pollutants.
