Victims of Partner Violence in Armed Conflict Contexts

Diversity Series in Latinx Scholars in International Affairs

The Ford Institute and Ridgway Center Diversity Series in Latinx Scholars in International Affairs, in close collaboration with the Center for Latin American Studies, will feature Greta Friedemann-Sánchez on October 27.

She will present Terrorized at Home and Falling Through Disciplinary and Policy Silos: Victims of Partner Violence in Armed Conflict Contexts, Dr. Friedemann-Sánchez will provide a summary of her research that evaluates the implementation of Colombia’s laws addressing intimate partner violence and violence against women. She will discuss how the scholarship on intimate partner violence in armed conflict contexts falls between the cracks of several fields. Her research calls for an interdisciplinary approach to ameliorate violence against women and to achieve political peace. She will also elaborate on her successful advocacy with the United Nations and Colombian officials that ultimately resulted in national amendments to Colombia’s legal framework being approved on August 4, 2021.

Dr. Friedemann-Sanchez is an Associate Professor at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. A native of Colombia, Dr. Friedemann-Sánchez holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology (2002) from the University of Minnesota. She completed postdoctoral training at the Center for Chronic Disease Outcomes Research, VA Medical Center. Her research aims to understand how and why gender equity or inequity is generated within families. Along with her collaborator, Margaret Grieve, she recently published Comisarías de Familia y Violencia Contra las Mujeres en Colombia: Puerta de Acceso y Retos Institucionales (2019 Taller de Edición Rocca).

This event is free and open to all.
