In this talk, Patrick McKelvey will discuss will discuss parts of his book Disability Works: Performance After Rehabilitation, which offers a cultural history of U.S. disability performance between 1960 and 1990. From state-funded "sign-mime" to Black modern dance, community theatre to Stanislavskian actor training, speculative activism to epistolary performance, the book recovers an expansive repertoire of aesthetic and infrastructural investigations into the terms of how disability works in modern American culture.
