Digging in the Archives, Overturning Assumptions

Bridget Keown, PhD
Lecturer in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies Program

Abstract: How can a feminist critique of science change our understanding of the history of medicine, and the lived experience of patients? What kind of archival work is necessary to overturn gendered assumptions about health, illness, and narrative? In this inaugural Health Humanities Research talk, Dr. Keown will reflect on her own work uncovering women’s lived experiences of trauma during the First World War, to address how research practices informed by feminist theory can overturn established historical narratives and offer new research pathways for the medical humanities.
