Using rubrics helps clarify and communicate your expectations to your students and make for a simpler, faster, and fair grading process. In this introductory-level workshop, we’ll present different types of rubrics, review rubric design best practices, and guide you through beginning to create a rubric to use in a course. We will also discuss un-rubrics, which are designed to promote student self-assessment and meta-learning. This workshop counts towards the completion of the Achievement in Pedagogy Badge.

As a result of completing this workshop, you will be able to:

• Define a rubric and identify its components
• Recognize when it might be appropriate to use a rubric
• Describe types of rubrics, including un-rubrics
• Describe best practices in rubric creation
• Explain how rubrics and un-rubrics can be used as instructional tools
• Begin to create a rubric or un-rubric that demonstrates alignment to a learning objective, clear performance criteria, and distinct levels of performance
