Designing Better Test Questions

Thursday, November 6, 2025 12:00pm to 1:15pm EST

During this workshop, we’ll explore how to create better test questions (true/false, multiple choice, essay), and we will practice composing test questions that are both clear and rigorous. We will also discuss how to prepare students for exam success and examine test results to inform teaching improvements. This workshop counts towards completion of the Achievement in Pedagogy Badge.

As a result of completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Recognize when it is appropriate to assess students using exams;
• Explain the pros and cons of different types of test questions in order to determine when each type might be appropriate to use;
• Explain how test results can be used as an instructional tool; and
• Begin to compose clear, appropriately challenging test questions which align with learning objectives and learning-objective levels.
