Current Challenges and New Developments in Restorative Materials

Current Challenges and New Developments in Restorative Materials
presented by Carmem Pfeifer DDS PhD
Associate Professor of Biomaterials and Biomechanics at Oregon Health and Science University

Dr. Pfeifer will discuss the degradation of methacrylate-based dental materials, including the chemistry of degradation and potential by-products, as well as its relative impact on mechanical properties and clinical longevity. Alternative monomers/additives with potentially increased resistance to degradation will also be presented. In addition, Dr. Pfeifer will discuss the future of composite development to improve survival in the oral environment. Materials can no longer be merely inert, but need to be able to reduce the biofilm re-colonization and secondary decay, as well as interact with the oral tissues.

Presented by the Pitt Dental Medicine Women in Craniofacial & Oral Research Group, and part of the Pitt Dental Medicine 125 anniversary celebration.
