DESCRIPTION:"Confirmation and Relevance: Fifty Years On" \n\nAbstract: Arou
 nd 50 years ago\, Wesley Salmon wrote his essay "Confirmation and Relevanc
 e" (C&R). In my opinion\, that paper has not received adequate attention. 
 In C&R\, Salmon beautifully explains Carnap's distinction between "confirm
 ation as firmness" and "confirmation as increase in firmness"\, and he pre
 sents various puzzles involving the "increase in firmness" notion (which h
 as since become known as the "Bayesian confirmation" relation). In this le
 cture\, I will focus on some of the issues discussed in that paper\; and\,
  I will report on some of the progress that has been made on those problem
 s in the last five decades. I will also discuss some other important featu
 res of "increase in firmness" (viz.\, "Bayesian confirmation")\, and their
  applications in contemporary philosophy of science and cognitive science.

 ---\n\nWesley C. Salmon joined the Department of Philosophy as Professor a
 nd Chair in 1981. He held the rank of University Professor from 1983 until
  his retirement in 1999. He exerted a profound influence over philosophy o
 f science as it was practiced in Pittsburgh and internationally. His inves
 tigations into scientific explanation\, causality\, probability and induct
 ion and the philosophy of space and time provide a model of insight and cl
 arity\, in both thought and word. He set an example personally through his
  unfailing integrity and kindness. He died in 2001. His memory survives th
 rough the scholars who study his work and the many who remember him person
 ally\, with respect and admiration. The Wesley C. Salmon Memorial Lecture 
 Fund has been established to support an annual lecture by a prominent scho
 lar in philosophy of science in honor of Wesley Salmon.
