Breun: Understanding the Racial Justice Implications of the Supreme Court's Recent Second Amendment Jurisprudence, featuring Kami N. Chavis. Chavis currently serves as Vice Dean, the R. Hugh and Nolie Haynes Professor of Law, and Director of the William and Mary Center for Criminal Justice Policy and Reform.
Chavis, a leader in the field of police accountability, focuses her research on using Cooperative Federalism principles and stakeholder participation to implement sustianable reforms in the criminal justice system. In NY Rifle v. Bruen, the Supreme Court struck down part of NY's concealed carry permitting law. This holding will reshape how courts evaluate current and future gun regulations, and the decision may have particular implications for marginalized racial groups given other legal doctrines. Chavis will explore these implications and suggest potential ways forward.
