A community-academic partnership to promote vaccine equity
Presenters: Jamil Bey, PhD; Maya Ragavan, MD, MPH, MS; Elizabeth Miller, MD, PhD, Mylynda Massart, MD, PhD, Dr. Shannah Tharp-Giliam, and Ms. Claudia Sanchez
The Community Vaccine Collaborative (CVC) is a community-academic partnership comprising community partners, community engagement specialists, researchers, health systems leaders, and other stakeholders with the mission of advancing vaccine equity during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. The CVC has met weekly since July 2020 and is co-facilitated by four community organizations: The Neighborhood Resilience Project; Casa San José; the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh; and UrbanKindInstitute. The CVC started to ensure equity and inclusion in the COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials and since then has expanded to focus on promoting vaccine trustworthiness, improving COVID-19 vaccine access, and centering community voices in the COVID-19 vaccine rollout process. The objectives of this workshop are: 1) describe the structures and processes of the CVC; and 2) support participants in their own community-partnered collaboratives. We will spend the first 20 minutes describing the key priorities of the CVC which include being community-led, promoting a safe space for communities to comfortably challenge researchers and healthcare professionals, and attending to power inequities. We will highlight the community-led vaccine distribution process as an example of our work. We then will divide into small-group sessions where participants will discuss challenges and brainstorm solutions in developing their own partnerships. Participants will leave with actionable solutions and strategies.
