Common Reliance Pitfalls and How to Overcome Them
Reliance is a common mechanism used in human subject research regulation that permits one IRB to act as the IRB of Record for external institutions. There are multiple scenarios where reliance may be utilized. These include:
- The NIH sIRB mandate (effective January 2018) requires all NIH-funded, multi-site projects to utilize reliance
- The DHHS sIRB mandate under the new 2018 Common Rule (effective January 2020) requires all DHHS funded, multi-site projects to utilize reliance
- Participation in a research consortium or network that requires use of reliance
- A myriad of other scenarios where reliance is not a requirement, but may be appropriate and helpful
This presentation aims to highlight common pitfalls that occur with reliance projects and how to proactively prevent or minimize them.
