The “command line” (AKA command prompt or shell) remains an important interface for computing, especially in the areas of research computing and tech industries. In this online, hands-on workshop, we’ll use the Bash command line to perform basic computing functions and see a sample of the ways researchers use the command line. Windows users who wish to follow along hands-on will need to install Git for Windows (to use the Git Bash utility). MacOS and Linux users have no installation requirements.

Topics include:

  • Navigating the filesystem; common directories and conventions of the Linux filesystem

  • Viewing, creating, modifying, moving, copying, and deleting files and directories

  • Searching the contents of text files

  • Running a Python script

  • Connecting to a remote server (Pitt’s research computing cluster)

Can't make it to this workshop? You can always contact us with your questions about this and other digital scholarship topics.

This workshop is part of our Coding and Computational Methods Series.
