Experiences of Transgender and Nonbinary Youth and their Families: Selected Findings
from the Trans Teen and Family Narratives Project
Family support is a key protective factor for the mental health of transgender and/or nonbinary (TNB) youth who face stigma related to their gender identity. In this talk I will present findings from the Trans Teen and Family Narratives (TTFN) Project, an NIH-funded community-engaged longitudinal mixed methods study to understand how the family environment affects TNB youth's mental health. I will share findings from the longitudinal component of the study as well as the development of the TTFN Conversation Toolkit, an online family-level intervention designed to support families with TNB youth in having conversations about gender, which can ultimately bolster family support and improve TNB youth's mental health. I will also discuss implications of this work for supporting TNB youth and their families.
