Chemical Engineering in the Lithium-Ion Battery Industry: A Personal Experience

Abstract: In this talk, Dr. Cary Hayner will describe the path he's taken from graduate researcher to startup founder, to cell design engineer for electric vehicle applications.  Cary will highlight some of the technical and non-technical learnings along his journey, as well as how his chemical engineering education has been applied throughout various projects in the lithium-ion battery space.

Bio: Dr. Cary Hayner is a lithium-ion battery expert with 15 years’ experience in the field. He’s currently a Senior Staff Cell Design Engineer at Rivian where he develops battery technology to accelerate the transition to sustainable transportation. Prior to that, Cary co-founded and served as the Chief Technology Officer of NanoGraf Corporation, a Chicago-based battery materials company, where he developed silicon-based anode materials for high-energy lithium-ion batteries. He is an inventor on 12+ patents, and author two book chapters and ten journal articles. Cary holds a PhD in chemical engineering from Northwestern University.
