Self, MD, MPH, is the Senior Vice President for Clinical Research, Director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (VICTR), and Principal Investigator for the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. In these roles, he leads many of the clinical and translational research efforts at Vanderbilt and within several national and international research networks, with a focus on team science, advancing the methods of clinical research, and embedding clinical trials into ongoing clinical care using a learning healthcare model.
Dr. Self is a physician-scientist and active clinician in emergency medicine. He has published over 360 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including over 30 manuscripts in The New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA. He has received over $500 million in research funding, including major awards from NIH, CDC, DoD, PCORI, foundations, and industry partners.
Dr. Self’s research focuses on developing and testing strategies for improving the care of patients with sepsis, pneumonia, ARDS, and related conditions. He designs and conducts late-stage clinical trials, effectiveness studies, and epidemiology platforms. He also focuses on building research infrastructure to facilitate the conduct of highly impactful biomedical research by many investigators and research teams. This work, which focuses on optimizing team science, includes building effective scientific collaboration, mentoring, training, and developing and maintaining systems of research.
He is the coordinating center principal investigator for the ARDS, Pneumonia, and Sepsis Consortium, an NIH-funded national platform focused on phenotyping critical illness syndromes. He is also the global lead for the STRIVE Network, which is an NIH-funded clinical trials group conducting a series of observational studies and clinical trials evaluating potential therapies for severe infections.
