Presenters: Michelle Colarusso Ph.D., LPC, ASC Rick Moody, MS, CAADC, ICAADC, CCCJS

Over the last few years, the goal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was to finance and increase delivery of mental health and addiction treatment for low-income individuals (Barry & Huskamp, 2011). This presentation will review racial disparities in addiction treatment, specifically with overdose rates, access to treatment, and the role insurance plays in coverage and utilization. Attendees will gain personal enrichment as well as professional development to better understand how to communicate need for treatment, work to connect to resources, and navigate the insurance barriers to obtain treatment for addiction. Participants will also learn the best way to ensure follow up treatment and what barriers are in place currently that prevents follow up treatment after hospitalization for minorities, specifically privately insured Americans.
