From Lab to Market – Understanding University Intellectual Property and Processes
Abstract: Innovation drives the economy and improves lives. The development of intellectual property is vital to both industry and academia. Here at the University of Pittsburgh, we strive to enable faculty and students to achieve these goals. Our efforts at the Innovation Institute are greatly aided when faculty and students understand the internal procedures at the University, the patent process, and commercialization. This presentation will provide an overview of intellectual property, the legal requirements for obtaining protection, an understanding of the University’s internal procedures and intellectual property policy, licensing, and business formation.

Mark continued his career at the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a patent examiner. Mark examined a range of technologies from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Mark returned to private practice with Flaster Greenberg prior to coming to the University of Pittsburgh at the Innovation Institute as a technology licensing associate.
