The Early Modern Worlds Initiative and the World History Center invite you to a lecture by Dr. Nicholas Abbott (Old Dominion University).
Senior female elites were integral to the financial and administrative practices of early modern South Asian states, but they were no less important to colonial state formation and the emergence of debt-financed military-fiscalism under the East India Company. This talk explores the transition from early modern to colonial state formation through the eventual life of Bahu Begam (1727–1816), a powerful matriarch living in the North Indian principality of Awadh, and her tumultuous relationship with male relatives and British officials.
